Carotenoid Biosynthesis in Fusarium

Many fungi of the genus Fusarium stand out for the complexity of their secondary metabolism. Individual species may differ in their metabolic capacities, but they usually share the ability to synthesize carotenoids, a family of hydrophobic terpenoid pigments widely distributed in nature. Early studies on carotenoid biosynthesis in Fusariumaquaeductuum have been recently extended in Fusarium fuj...

Stereospecific studies on carotenoid biosynthesis.

Various species of [2-14C] MVA stereospecifically labelled with tritium at C-2, C-4 and C-5 have been used to study details of carotenoid biosynthesis in a variety of preparations including chioroplasts, fruit and root slices, and fungi. Mechanisms have been proposed for the dimerization of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate to form phytoene, for the cyclization of acyclic precursors to form aand a-c...

Carotenoid Biosynthesis—the Early Steps

This paper describes recent biosynthetic and enzymological studies from a number of laboratories and relates them to our current understanding of the pathways of carotenoid formation. A number of problems concerning phytoene biosynthesis and dehydrogenation are discussed and the work of our own laboratory on the biosynthesis of the triterpenoid carotenoids is reviewed.

Carotenoid biosynthesis in Rhodotorula glutinis.

It was determined that lycopene could be cyclized directly by Rhodotorula glutinis. It was also shown the the temperature effect (i.e., increased beta-carotene synthesis in response to lower incubation temperatures) in R. glutinis was controlled by changes in enzyme concentration.

Carotenoid biosynthesis in flowering plants.

The general scheme of carotenoid biosynthesis has been known for more than three decades. However, molecular description of the pathway in plants began only in the 1990s after the genes for the carotenogenic enzymes were cloned. Recent data on the biochemistry of carotenogenesis and its regulation in vivo present the possibility of genetically manipulating this pathway in crop plants.
